Louisiana Center for Health Equity Statement on DEI
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives are under attack at a time when they are needed most. A recent barrage of executive orders from the Trump administration have been released and are designed to dismantle DEI policies across federal agencies, scaling back decades of progress on a commitment to equal opportunity. These recent executive orders not only threaten workplace diversity but also threaten the healthcare system and its ability to deliver equitable care that addresses issues including medical bias, healthcare access, and structural and social drivers of health. The elimination of DEI measures falsely frames them as discriminatory, ignoring the reality that they address systemic barriers and provide people from all backgrounds with fair opportunities and advancement in the workplace, healthcare and beyond.
Moreover, health equity cannot be achieved without a commitment to DEI, as systemic disparities in health outcomes are deeply rooted in racism and economic injustices. Additionally, the consequences of erasing DEI extend far beyond the workplace. Without DEI efforts, Black women, for example, will continue to face disproportionately high maternal mortality rates and racial bias in pain assessment and treatment will persist. Eliminating DEI programs in research and health care not only make it harder to address systemic inequalities but could also increase risk exposure for healthcare systems.
Amid the current political environment and legal challenges, LCHE remains steadfast and committed to health equity. LCHE also stands firmly in support of DEI and will continue to advocate for a just future for all.
