2025 Reflections: LCHE Leads with Resolve, Hope, and Community

2025 was a defining year for the Louisiana Center for Health Equity. Amid policy threats, funding cuts, and deep uncertainty, LCHE remained a steady, trusted voice for communities across the state. Our work reflects resilience, partnership, and an unwavering commitment to advancing health equity for all Louisianans.

Below is a snapshot of our impact.

Standing Strong Through a Challenging Year

LCHE navigated a difficult policy landscape, defending equity when it was under attack and raising awareness about the human impact of state and federal budget decisions. Our leadership was highlighted in statewide and national media, reinforcing LCHE’s role as a champion for disadvantaged communities and a trusted source of clarity during uncertainty.

Progress Toward LA40by2030

Momentum continued to build for LA40by2030, our statewide initiative to move Louisiana into the top 40 healthiest states by 2030. Through the Health Summit, regional tours, community listening sessions, and cross‑sector engagement, LCHE strengthened partnerships and elevated local priorities that will shape a healthier future.

This year also brought meaningful policy progress—including protections for Medicaid, expanded behavioral health supports for students and young adults, and new maternal and child health coverage. These wins advance the systems‑level changes needed to improve Louisiana’s health ranking and move the state closer to the LA40by2030 goal.

Keeping Families Informed During Federal Uncertainty and the SNAP Crisis

During the federal shutdown, LCHE provided timely, accessible updates to help families navigate disruptions. As enhanced ACA tax credits approached expiration, LCHE kept families informed about what was at stake and how to prepare, emphasizing the importance of protecting affordable coverage.

When the shutdown threatened to halt SNAP benefits, LCHE delivered clear guidance to families statewide. State action ultimately secured November benefits for seniors, people with disabilities, and children, and all SNAP assistance was restored once the federal government reopened.

Elevating Community Voice

LCHE hosted the One Big Beautiful Bill Act Town Hall, fostering open dialogue on health equity, policy change, and what’s at stake for Louisiana families. President Alma Stewart Allen’s commentary in the Louisiana Illuminator urged Senator Bill Cassidy to protect parents’ rights to clear, evidence‑based vaccine information. Her weekly Today’s Health Topics show continued to bring accessible, trusted health discussions to households across the state.

Community Engagement and Civic Participation

Civic engagement proved powerful in 2025. More than 60% of voters rejected four constitutional amendments that would have reshaped the judiciary, overhauled major tax and fiscal policies, expanded property tax exemptions, and altered state spending and revenue rules. LCHE played a key role in educating communities about what these changes meant—reinforcing that when people understand what’s at stake, they shape the future.

LCHE Elevates Louisiana’s Voice Nationally and Globally

LCHE represented Louisiana in national and international health equity forums, elevating state‑level challenges and solutions. President Alma Stewart Allen also served on several national networks, including the Children’s Advocacy Leadership Network, the National Collaborative on Health, the National Health Law Program Southern Health Advocates, and Families USA. These collaborations brought national insights home to strengthen local work and amplify Louisiana’s voice.

Inspiring the Next Generation

One of the year’s brightest highlights was the launch and growth of LCHE’s youth initiatives. The Health Crusaders—our emerging leaders and workforce pipeline program—continued to inspire hope and action. Alongside the Youth Peace Olympics, the Youth Football Camp, and the new LYFE Junior Explorers Academy, LCHE expanded opportunities for young people to build leadership skills, strengthen well‑being, and advocate for healthier communities.

These young emerging leaders remind us that the work we do today is planting seeds for a more equitable Louisiana tomorrow.

Looking Ahead

LCHE remains steadfast in its belief that Louisiana can—and will—become a healthier, more equitable state. With strong partnerships, community leadership, and a shared commitment to justice, we will continue building the Louisiana our children deserve.

THANK YOU!

On behalf the LCHE Team, THANK YOU for your support. We couldn't have achieved all of this without the dedication of our Board of Directors, volunteers, partners, and supporters. It makes our work possible, and it is helping to make a difference in the lives of so many. We look forward to continuing our progress together with you this year and beyond.
